I discount this article as FUD, a type of sales and marketing strategy aimed at making yourself look good by planting Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt about the competition, you summed it up in the above comment
From a technical point of view the article has many holes, i guess it was pitched at LOB and not technical people, it neither does a proper SWOT analysis or suggest a balanced counter argument, We used X because of Y.
I think the FUD backfires quickly
Frequently asked questions - How do you integrate with SAP®? SAP® .Net Connector
One size fits all point solutions based on 2 old proprietary techniques RFC and .Net, I can only imagine the SAP .Net connector must be close to, if not at EOL, with no community to support any issues which might arise from upgrade.
Interestingly I have done a number of projects lately, like-for-like technical upgrades, not fun but pay the bills, where the goal of the project is to decommission old COTS (Commercial-off-the-shelf) connector based solutions, SAP DCOM, IDoc Connector, Business Connector, ITS etc, with a similar solution using modern techniques like UI5 and Netweaver Gateway. My observation there is always an old box in the corner of the server room running an XP VM stuck in time, nobody knows how it got there and no one (wants to) knows how it works, by definition Legacy - No Thanks
